After
returning from WWII, Charles 'Buzz' Beeson, with his new wife May,
started a family and a business. Before the war Charles had worked
at Hook's Nursery in Lake County Illinois, so he thought he would
give landscaping on the North Shore a try. They worked long and
hard every day building a landscaping business, raising eight children,
and keeping their faith in the American Dream. The business prospered
and the children grew and started their own families. |

When
Charles and May Beeson started looking for a farm to build a nursery
to support the garden center and landscape business over forty years
ago, they found the perfect soils for growing healthy hearty trees
in western McHenry County. |

Joe
Beeson met Mary McClelland in Montana
where he studied economics. They returned to Illinois in 1979 with
a plan to expand the nursery into wholesale. In 1980, Beeson's McHenry
County Nursery was born. Joe and Mary worked hard together to build
the nursery into a general line wholesale
grower supplying the upper Midwest. |

The
original 100-acre farm is located in the Northwest corner of McHenry
County, on White Oaks Road. McHenry County Nursery has now grown to
four farms spread out over 3 miles, covering 400 acres. All of the
farms are located on the White Rock Moraine laid down during the Illinois
Glacial period. The soils are well leached and have a pH ranging from
5.5 to 7 and an almost stone free clay-loam. The nursery today includes
not only growing fields,
but poly-houses, propagation
facilities, holding yards,
pot-in-pot ranges,
and above ground container
ranges all automated with drip irrigation. |

The
Beeson's McHenry County family has grown
over the years, with siblings, cousins, and children of the employees
joining the group. The newest generation, the Beeson daughters Cali
and Tana, are also helping out more and more as they grow and learn
about business and growing plants. |

Charles
'Buzz' Beeson passed away in 1995, and left a legacy of hard work,
a love of trees and love for his wife May (the May in May's
Delight® Crabbapple). He left his wife of 53 years a continuous
reminder of his love in the form of a May's Delight® crabapple
outside her kitchen window that blooms for her every spring. May continued
managing her affairs, keeping her faith and going about her chores
every day on her farm in Harvard until she joined her husband in June
of 2008. She had her health, children, grandchildren, dogs and cats,
and acres of trees to view reminding her of the power of hard work
and faith. |
