Field Growing:

Our field soils laid down by the glaciers and forests of tens of thousands of years ago contain many physical and chemical soil characteristics perfect for growing trees. The soils on our moraine slopes are prone to erosion, so we have aerial contoured all our farms with permanent grass strips between the tree rows. The grass greatly reduces compaction around the root zones.

The trees are kept clean cultivated up to three feet from the trunks, reducing competition and creating an area where rain soaks in where it is needed and fertilizer and topsoil stay in place.

We mow the grass strips depositing the grass into the cultivated areas adding organic matter to the soil.

  Digging:
Our specimen B&B trees are dug by skilled crews at the optimum time of year, with the right root-ball size based on the above ground portion of the plant. Even though the majority of the root area is removed, the majority of weight and stored food is in the harvested roots, which easily regenerate new roots. Since we plant every tree by hand in our clay-loam soils we can certify that our trees are planted at the correct depth. Also, we remove any excess soil at the time of digging and use four-bladed truncated tree spades which give the maximum root mass for the caliper inch.

Container Growing:
The majority of our plants are propagated by grower Mary T. McClelland (of our sister company Glacier Oaks Nursery) by seed, softwood cuttings, or root cuttings. The strongest cuttings and seedlings are selected to develop into liners that are grown for several years as we strive for a healthy top and a well-branched root system.

They are then transplanted into #3 up to #20 pots depending on the plant, and maintained in our container and pot-in-pot ranges.

Our growing areas are watered and fertigated through a drip system equipped with a drainage system connected into our terracing and waterway system to conserve water and eliminate run-off.

Our GO Trees Container Tree Production System grew from a need for better survivability of field liners in the harder to transplant tree species, including many natives. Over ten years ago, we started potting some of the more difficult to transplant trees and letting them produce some roots before planting them in warm summer soils with drip irrigation. We found the same benefits applied to planting these container trees in the final landscape. Many of our GO Trees are in Pot-in-Pot ranges, and we have found the natural insulating properties of the earth protect the roots adequately from the cold as well as from heat.

Plant Health:
We have drip irrigation to prevent plants from going into a shut-down mode during droughty times, but we let nature do most of the routine watering, even when things get a little dry.
We check our soil pH and nutrient content annually in the field and far more often in containers to make sure we are providing adequate nutrient availability to plants, and we fertilize only when we drop below an established threshold. The goals of our fertilizing program are to increase health of the tree - not to over-stimulate top growth. The purpose of fertilizing is to improve the appearance and condition of plants, and increase vigor to make plants more resistant to stresses.
Our trees and shrubs are monitored for diseases and pests and treated in the least toxic manner. Plants that are too pampered in their growing site will require pampering in the landscape.

Winter pruning gives a tree a good start by enhancing its natural form, with little maintenance needed once in the landscape.

Inventory:
We label all plants as they enter the nursery, and when they arrive at their growing destination on one of our four farms we scan the labels and record their location and size.
Additional codes are used for recording horticultural practices and changes over time. Inventory is done on an ongoing basis with the data entered into our main database for easy access to answer your questions.

Product Lines:

Growing native plants that will thrive in an urban environment requires rigorous training and conditioning, and only the best will survive. Planting depth, root pruning, heavy clay loam soils, proper digging and handling, and northern winters and summers in open fields will give the young trees the proper upbringing to make them competitors when the big transplant day comes.

Shade Trees
Glacier Oaks Nursery propagates, grows, and evaluates many native oak species that are used in MCN’s field production and are also a part of our Pot-in-Pot line of container trees.

Container grown oaks are also perfect for field production, and many are lined out in our glacial moraine soils where they are grown on to larger specifications to be sold as B&B trees.

Evergreens
We grow several arborvitae cultivars up to a full and heavy 8-10ft. Our Arborvitae are propagated by hardwood cuttings that are rooted in sand and then transferred to our Jumbo pots where they grow for two years, creating fibrous root systems and heavy tops. We grow them in beds in our forest soils for two to three more years before they are transplanted again to their finishing spacing where they are grown until harvest.
